Rio Pitrisconi Jeep Hiking in Monte Nieddu, Sardinia — Private 4x4 Adventure
The Monte Nieddu massif hides one of Gallura's best-kept secrets: a chain of granite pools fed by the Rio Pitrisconi, accessible only by ancient mule tracks that a Land Rover Defender 110 can still navigate. On this private 4-hour excursion with Bruno Manzoni Excursions, you ride into the mountain, swim in clear natural pools beneath a waterfall, then climb to the 615 m Pala di Monti lookout for one of the widest panoramas in northeast Sardinia. It finishes with Pecorino, Carasau flatbread, local sausage and a glass of Cannonau — arguably the best possible way to end a hike.

Why Book This Tour?
The Rio Pitrisconi jeep hiking tour in Monte Nieddu is the kind of experience you can't replicate on a beach day. Bruno Manzoni has been guiding in the Monte Nieddu granite highlands for years, and his local knowledge turns a 4-hour outing into a genuine immersion in Gallurese culture — the ancient stazzi (stone farmhouses), the shepherd trails worn smooth over centuries, the hidden waterfalls that don't appear on any tourist map.
Because this runs as a private group, the pace and route adapt to you. If your group wants a longer swim in the granite pools or more time at the Stazzu Pitrisconi, the itinerary bends around that. It's the opposite of a bus tour: intimate, flexible, and led by someone who clearly loves where he lives. The perfect complement to the guided hikes in Sardinia you'll find along the coast — this one goes deep into the island's rugged interior.
What You'll See & Do
The tour departs in a classic Land Rover Defender 110, immediately leaving tarmac for ancient mule tracks that thread through Monte Nieddu's granite terrain. Your first landmark is the Stazzu Pitrisconi — a traditional Gallurese stone farmhouse that predates modern roads and still looks exactly as it would have two centuries ago. Bruno explains the pastoral history of these highland farms as you walk the final 10–15 minutes on foot to the river.
- Natural granite pools of Rio Pitrisconi — swim in cold, crystal-clear mountain water beneath a genuine waterfall
- A natural rock slide and jump point above the canyon, visible from the poolside
- Ancient oak and Mediterranean scrub woodland lining the river banks
- Pala di Monti summit lookout at 615 m — panoramic sweep over Gallura, Tavolara island, La Cinta beach and Lu Impostu lagoon
- Sardinian aperitivo at the summit: Pecorino cheese, local sausage, Carasau flatbread, Cannonau red wine

FAQ
Can you swim in the Rio Pitrisconi pools year-round?
Swimming is best from late May through September when water levels are comfortable and air temperatures are warm. The pools are cold even in summer — fed by mountain springs — but perfectly refreshing after the hike. In spring and autumn the water level can be higher after rain, which makes the waterfall more dramatic but the swimming more challenging.
Is the hike to the pools difficult?
No — it's a short walk of 10 to 15 minutes on a rough mountain path from where the jeep parks. The terrain is rocky granite so good footwear matters, but the distance and elevation gain are modest. The jeep covers the long, steeper approach to Monte Nieddu, leaving only the final stretch on foot.
What is the Pala di Monti lookout like?
Pala di Monti sits at 615 metres and offers a 180-degree panorama across Gallura, taking in the island of Tavolara, La Cinta beach, Brandinchi lagoon and Lu Impostu. It's also where the Sardinian aperitivo takes place — Pecorino, sausage, Carasau flatbread and Cannonau wine — so you get the views and the taste of the island at the same time.
How many people are on this tour?
This is a fully private tour — the jeep and guide are exclusively for your group. There are no other travellers added. Group size is flexible but typically suited for up to 6 people in the Defender 110.
What Hikers Say
The 4x4 jeep tour was absolutely amazing! The guides were very kind, helpful, and made sure everyone had a great time. They shared many interesting facts about Sardinia. The tour itself was very exciting — we discovered many beautiful places that would be difficult to reach on our own. There was also time for swimming — although the water was quite cold, it was definitely worth it! At the end we enjoyed an aperitivo with local specialties and a beautiful view of Sardinia, which was the perfect ending.
Amazing jeep tour up into the mountains. Just the right amount of hiking (not too much as hot!) and lots of opportunities to swim in mountain pools with beautiful views. The slide and jump into the pool overlooking the canyon were a highlight. Ended with a trip to the top to take in an incredible view over Tavolara, La Cinta, Brandinchi and Lu Impostu, whilst eating copious amounts of delicious local cheese, wine, sausage and bread. Our guide Bruno was excellent.
Bruno was a kind, attentive guide who modified the hike and activities to suit our group's needs. His tour includes trips to wonderful areas and swimming pools that would be difficult to find and access on your own. The tour was informative, fun and a very refreshing alternative to the beach.
